When to use golden hour

Use golden hour when you want warm light, visible direction, shape, and texture. It works well for portraits, landscapes, city streets, architecture, travel, and outdoor products.

The sun is low, so shadows are longer and light can wrap across a subject from the side or back.

When to use blue hour

Use blue hour when you want softer ambient light, city lights, sky color, or a calmer scene after direct sun has gone.

Blue hour works well for skylines, streets, interiors with window glow, night transitions, and scenes where harsh direct light would be distracting.

Photography examples

Portrait

Golden hour gives skin warmth and directional shape. Blue hour gives softer mood and works well with artificial lights.

City scene

Golden hour lights buildings from the side. Blue hour balances sky color with streetlights and windows.

Landscape

Golden hour emphasizes texture and shadow. Blue hour reduces contrast and can make the scene feel quieter.

Limits

Golden hour and blue hour are planning labels, not fixed promises. Clouds, mountains, buildings, haze, and latitude can change how the light looks on location.
