Seasonal sun path

How the sun path changes throughout the year

The sun does not take the same path every day. Its path shifts through the year, changing sunrise direction, sunset direction, sun height, day length, and shadow length.

Short answer

The sun path changes throughout the year because Earth is tilted as it orbits the sun. In summer, the sun usually takes a higher, longer path across the sky. In winter, it takes a lower, shorter path, which creates longer shadows and shorter days.

Seasonal pattern

TermMeaning
SummerHigher sun path, longer days, shorter midday shadows.
WinterLower sun path, shorter days, longer shadows.
Equinox periodsDay and night are closer in length, with sunrise and sunset nearer east and west.
Solstice periodsThe seasonal extremes of sun path and day length.

Why sunrise and sunset move

Sunrise and sunset directions shift across the year. Around equinox periods, they are closer to east and west. Around solstice periods, they move toward their seasonal extremes.

The exact directions depend on latitude. A place far north or far south sees larger seasonal changes than a place near the equator.

What this means in real life

For homes, seasonal sun path changes decide whether rooms get winter light or summer heat. For gardens, they change which beds are sunny enough. For photography, they change where sunrise and sunset light enters a scene.

For shadows, the key idea is simple: lower sun makes longer shadows, and higher sun makes shorter shadows.

Seasonal examples

Apartment viewing

A room that looks bright in summer may get very little direct sun in winter if nearby buildings block the low sun.

Garden planning

A bed that gets full summer sun may sit in partial shade during spring or autumn.

Photography

The same landmark may line up with sunrise in one season and need a different shooting position in another.

Limits

Seasonal sun path explains the astronomical pattern. Local terrain, buildings, trees, and weather decide what light actually reaches the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Does the sun rise in the same place every day?

No. Sunrise direction shifts through the year. The amount of shift depends on location and season.

Why are winter shadows longer?

Winter shadows are longer because the sun is lower in the sky for much of the day.

Is the pattern the same in both hemispheres?

The seasonal timing is opposite. When the northern hemisphere has summer, the southern hemisphere has winter.
