## Across Australia

Totality reaches the mainland in the Kimberley in the late morning, where it lasts longest, up to 5 min 10 s. The path then crosses the Northern Territory near Tennant Creek, the south-west corner of Queensland and New South Wales through Bourke and Dubbo.

It leaves the coast over Sydney around 2 pm, with just under four minutes of totality. Canberra and Newcastle are just outside the path, and Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide see between about 76 and 81% of the Sun covered.

## New Zealand in the late afternoon

The shadow reaches the South Island around 4:15 pm. Queenstown and Dunedin get about three minutes of totality, with the Sun only 8 to 10° above the north-western horizon. In mountain country around Queenstown the terrain can easily rise higher than that, so choose a site with an open view to the north-west.

July is winter in both countries. Even in Sydney the Sun is only about 29° high at maximum, low in the northern sky.

## Safety

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, never look directly at the Sun without suitable solar viewing protection. Eclipse glasses should comply with ISO 12312-2. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need purpose-made filters fitted over the front of the optics.
