## Morning over South America

The path starts in the Pacific and passes over the Galápagos Islands early in the morning. It crosses southern Ecuador around Loja, northern Peru near Iquitos and the Brazilian Amazon near Manaus, with more than eight minutes of annularity in Loja and Iquitos.

The longest ring, 10 min 27 s, falls in northern Brazil. Quito, Guayaquil, Lima and Bogotá are outside the path and see a partial eclipse.

## Sunset over Portugal and Spain

The shadow reaches Madeira in the late afternoon and the Algarve and Andalusia just before sunset. In Seville the ring forms at about 17:52 CET with the Sun only 7° above the west-south-western horizon, and in Valencia the Sun is barely 2° up.

The northern edge of the path runs close to Lisbon and Madrid, so a short trip south makes the difference there. At these heights haze, hills and buildings can hide the Sun, so pick a spot with an open view to the west-south-west.

## FAQ

### What time is the eclipse on 26 January 2028?

The eclipse peaks at 3:07 PM UTC. Local times depend on where you are: in Seville, the ring of fire begins at 5:52 PM and ends at 5:59 PM local time.

### How long does the ring of fire last?

Up to 10 min 27 sec near the point of greatest eclipse. Places inside the path see less, and the phase lasts longest near the centre line. In Seville it lasts about 7 min 10 sec.

### Will the eclipse be annular in Madrid?

No. Madrid is outside the path and sees a partial eclipse, with about 82% of the Sun covered at 5:55 PM local time.

### Will the eclipse be annular in Lisbon?

No. Lisbon is outside the path and sees a partial eclipse, with about 81% of the Sun covered at 4:54 PM local time.

### Why is the January 2028 eclipse hard to see from Spain?

It happens just before sunset, when the Sun is low. In Seville the Sun is about 7° high during the ring and farther east it is lower still, so a building, hill or bank of haze to the west-south-west can block the view.

## Safety

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, never look directly at the Sun without suitable solar viewing protection. Eclipse glasses should comply with ISO 12312-2. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need purpose-made filters fitted over the front of the optics.
