## Where totality happens

The Moon’s shadow reaches land at the Strait of Gibraltar in the middle of the morning. Cádiz, Tarifa, Gibraltar, Málaga, Ceuta and Tangier are inside the path, and Tarifa and Ceuta get close to five minutes of totality. Seville and Granada are just outside it. Their 98 to 99% coverage is still a partial eclipse, so the sky stays bright and the corona never appears.

The path then follows the North African coast past Oran and Benghazi and crosses Egypt, where Luxor sits close to the point of longest totality, 6 min 23 s, just after 1 pm local time. It continues over Jeddah and Mecca to Yemen and Somalia. No total eclipse before 2041 lasts longer.

## Timing and sun height

In southern Spain totality comes at about 10:45 CEST, with the Sun roughly 38° up and a little south of due east, so check that nothing blocks your view in that direction. In Luxor the Sun is almost overhead, at about 82°.

For Spain this is the second total eclipse in a year, after the eclipse of 12 August 2026 crossed the north of the country. An annular eclipse follows on 26 January 2028, with its ring visible at sunset over Andalusia.

## FAQ

### What time is the eclipse on 2 August 2027?

The eclipse peaks at 10:06 AM UTC. Local times depend on where you are: in Cádiz, totality begins at 10:45 AM and ends at 10:48 AM local time.

### How long does totality last?

Up to 6 min 23 sec near the point of greatest eclipse. Places inside the path see less, and the phase lasts longest near the centre line. In Cádiz it lasts about 2 min 50 sec.

### Will the eclipse be total in Seville?

No. Seville is outside the path and sees a partial eclipse, with about 98% of the Sun covered at 10:47 AM local time.

### Will the eclipse be total in Madrid?

No. Madrid is outside the path and sees a partial eclipse, with about 86% of the Sun covered at 10:51 AM local time.

### Will the eclipse be total in London?

No. London is outside the path and sees a partial eclipse, with about 42% of the Sun covered at 10:00 AM local time.

### Why does totality last so long in Egypt?

The Moon is near its closest point to Earth, so it looks large, and Earth is close to its farthest point from the Sun, so the Sun looks slightly small. Near Luxor the eclipse also happens with the Sun almost overhead, where Earth’s rotation carries observers along with the shadow and keeps them in it for longer.

## Safety

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, never look directly at the Sun without suitable solar viewing protection. Eclipse glasses should comply with ISO 12312-2. Cameras, binoculars and telescopes need purpose-made filters fitted over the front of the optics.
